Swans extend lead at the top

Report by Rod Jermy,

On a perfect pitch for running rugby, Staines extended their lead at the top of the Counties 5 Surrey League by 10 points with an emphatic win away to second-placed Woking RFC.

From the first kick-off, Staines stated their intentions, with front row and Man of the Match James Griffith taking a clean catch and driving into the onrushing Woking forward pack.

A quick ball from the base of the ruck allowed Staines's backs to link and give full-back Sean Oliver the room to dance his way over the line for his first points of the afternoon.

Despite missing the conversion, Staines had laid down the first marker in this top-of-the-table clash.

Straight from the restart, Griffiths caught and took the play into the Woking half.

Swans scrum-half Aaron Norcott set the tempo of attack, bringing his forwards into the game and allowing the attack back line to move the ball wide for Tarrance Kadida to dot down in the corner after only five minutes played.

Woking, brandishing a big dominant forward pack, just couldn’t get their own way at the set piece. Staines took advantage of this again after 10 minutes, with Jason Lee cutting through the middle, giving Finn Dykes a wonderfully taken try. This time converted by Oliver.

This spurred Woking into life, with the hosts winning a penalty in the Staines half and driving off the resulting set piece to get their first points of the afternoon.

Now, with some momentum behind them and the Swans losing a couple of big players to injury, Woking crashed over again and converted their efforts.

With the half closing out, the referee was knocked to the ground and stayed there for a while, just to add to the drama of a close game.

This small break gave Staines a chance to compose themselves and for Oliver to slot a penalty just before half-time to make the score 12-25 to the away team.

With head Coach Jon Humphrey’s having to make some more unscheduled changes due to injury, it took a while for the game to pick up the tempo of the first half.

This was typified in the first minute, with Staines's first yellow card of the afternoon.

Staines’s back row, led by Luke Rogers, batted back attack after attack from Woking.

But a penalty for descent against Woking allowed Staines the chance from the resulting set piece line out to drive over and hooker Sammy Lee Jones to score from the resulting driving maul. Converted by Oliver.

With both teams starting to tire, Staines were awarded a penalty in the Woking half, which again was executed by full-back Oliver.

With the referee’s patience running out, Staines had their second yellow card with nine minutes remaining for hooker Jones.

But with Staines wing forwards Thomson and Webb working hard at the breakdown, they frustrated the home side.

Woking, though, never gave up against Staines's 14 men and managed another try from some impressive forward work. With the conversion missed, the referee blew the final whistle. Woking 17-35 Staines
